Smoking ceremony and tree planting marks start of Midland Park construction

The City of Swan has commenced construction at Midland Park by planting trees around the future public open space.

Midland Park is one of the key public open spaces being delivered as part of the transformational New Junction project.

Nearly 50 large native White Gums have been delivered to the site, with 100 more trees to be planted at the park throughout the year.

The new trees will provide habitats for birds and local fauna, while delivering shade and shelter for the local community.

The grove is part of the first stage of works for Midland Park, which will also include a grassed oval, perimeter path, terraced seating, a civic zone and youth space.

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas and Midland/Guildford Ward Councillors Johnson and Scanlan attended the site for an official smoking ceremony to mark the start of works.

Jeremy Garlett, Traditional Owner, welcomed attendees by burning White Gum leaves and Sandalwood to ward off bad spirits and cleanse the site.

Mayor Lucas said he was honoured to have witnessed the smoking ceremony at Midland Park.
