Hanging out at Midland Park
This week we hit another New Junction milestone when we started construction of the youth hangout zone at Midland Park. This vibrant space will give our teenagers a place to own and belong.
The youth hangout zone includes a basketball half court, rock climbing wall, rope maze, fireman’s pole, shade sail, hit-up wall and casual seating. It will be a place to connect with friends and get active.
It’s distinctly Midland, with an urban and edgy feel that comes from its brick walls and industrial style steel walkway.
The design also references Midland’s sporting history. The park has hosted many recreational activities over the years, from lawn bowls to trotting, cricket, cycling, football and lacrosse. Between 1905 and 1914, the park was home to Midland Football Club. The team colours of black and gold are woven throughout the brickwork and seating. There are also allusions to the ball-sports that were once played, with playful half-spheres to lounge on.
When construction is complete, we will be inviting community members to help us create a mural on the walkway wall.
Midland Park is one of the key public open spaces being delivered as part of the transformational New Junction project. In addition to the youth hangout zone, the first stage of works includes a grove of trees, grassed oval, perimeter path, terrace style seating and a grandstand structure.
